Although it is adults that go to prison, the likelihood that a child will ultimately end up there can be predicted before they can tie their own shoes. Some prison systems have noted a correlation: they have started to project the number of beds needed in the future based on current 3rd grade reading scores.

The Prodigy Project, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, assists young boys with academic achievement by encouraging and demonstrating a love of reading.

The Prodigy Project is a grassroots community-based program working to secure successful futures for young black boys. Through the efforts of literate African-American male volunteers and others, the program strives to counter negative stereotypes, improve literacy, enhance achievement and employment, and reduce the black male presence in the penal system.

:: January 16: The Prodigy Project is once again proud to announce that we will partner with Emory University's Volunteer Emory team to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. TPP will join hands in service with Emory students, faculty, staff, and alumni from 9am-12pm at the College Park Library to perpetuate MLK'ss vision of civil rights, service, and justice for all. :: December 16: McKesson Provider Technologies' Physician Practice Solutions division bought and built 15 shining new bikes for The Prodigy Project Seaborn Lee Elementary School program students. The boys and school administrators where invited out to the McKesson office for a pizza and cake party and to receive the bikes. Senior Vice President, David Henriksen presented the bikes to the boys and talked to them about the importance of education. The McKesson Corporation is a strong supporter of The Prodigy Project and provides mentoring, financial support, and volunteers for the programs.

:: December 10: The Prodigy Project conducted its annual "The Art of Giving" session at the College Park Library. The session started promptly at 10am. The aim of the session was 1) to discuss importance of giving, 2) allow for the boys to wrap gifts for their mothers, and 3) allow for the volunteers and staff to wrap and provide gifts to the boys.

:: April 29: The Prodigy Project's Seaborn Lee and College Park programs, a total of 55 boys, attended a field trip at McKesson as part of The Prodigy Project's Business Outreach Program.
:: April 13: The Prodigy Project conducted a presentation for the College Park Elementary PTA's Community Resources for Parent's Night event.
:: March 27, 2010: Emory students as members of the Emory Student Chapter of the NAACP hosted The Prodigy Project College Park program on the Emory campus. The boys enjoyed word games and puzzles, visited the campus museum, toured a freshman dorm, and capped it off with their favorite activity of the day: all-you-can-eat pizza, burgers, french fries, ice cream, cake, and cookies at the university student cafeteria! Emory students will mentor the Prodigy boys one Saturday a month.
:: March 13, 2010: The Prodigy Project participates in the Dismantling the School to Prison Population Forum conducted at the John Marshall Law School.
:: March 6, 2010: The Prodigy Project met with Central United Methodist Church to discuss the possibility of starting a Prodigy program at the church.
:: March 5, 2010: The Prodigy Project participates in United Way's Get Ready to Read seminar conducted at Morehouse College.
:: February 13, 2010: The Prodigies make Valentine's Day cards and participate in discussions on the importance of appreciating the parents and guardians that are responsible for their care.
:: December 29, 2009: The Prodigy Project delivered large boxes of food to 10 families in College Park. The food was collected from McKesson Corporation's "Donate Food for the Holidays" benefit drive. McKesson Corporation is a sponsor of the annual food drive, and they also sponsor field trips for the boys to their Alpharetta, GA technology division location.
:: December 19 - 20, 2009: The Prodigy Project staff delivered Holiday gifts to over 70 Prodigy boys. The gifts were provided by Nordstrom Perimeter customers courtesy of Nordstrom's Holiday Gift Giving Tree program.
:: December 12, 2009: The Prodigy Project participated in College Park's annual holiday parade.
:: December 10, 2009: The Seaborn Lee Elementary prodigies decorated and assembled bookbags for local hospital children's wards. The book bags and materials were donated by McKesson Information Solutions, a division of McKesson Corporation.
:: November 14, 2009: The Prodigy Project and Emory University joined forces as part of the university's annual "Emory Cares" program. The university transported Emory students to College Park where the students conducted science experiments and discussed the importance of school and education. Afterwards, The Prodigy Project provided pizza, chips, cookies, and other treats to the boys, students, school staff, and volunteers!
:: September 3, 2009: Emory students as members of the Emory Student Chapter of the NAACP hosts The Prodigy Project College Park program on the Emory campus. This was the first meeting as a result of a new partnership between The Prodigy Project and Emory University. Emory students will mentor the Prodigy boys one Saturday a month.
:: August 29, 2009: The Prodigy Project's Founder and CEO Michael Johnson served as the keynote speaker at Emory University's first ever Black Student Orientation Weekend. The event, the Universal General Body Meeting, was targeted at Emory's incoming freshman class and featured a panel of students and faculty of various resources on campus. The weekend also served as the basis for Emory's larger effort to unite the entire black community.
:: August 22, 2009: Nordstrom at Perimeter Mall hosted The Prodigy Project's College Park program for a half day field trip. Nordstrom provided an opportunity for the boys to learn and understand the retail industry. The boys met with the store manager and department managers and toured their offiecs and departments. They received instructions and training on men's clothing, style, and fashion; on the negative consequences of criminal activities such as shoplifting; on business operations; and on men's activities such as tieing a tie, folding a pocket square, and co-ordinating business attire. the event was a huge success!
:: August 15, 2009: The Prodigy Project accompanies the College Park program boys on a field trip to the "America I AM: The African American Imprint" exhibit at the Atlanta Civic Center.
:: June 20, 2009: The Prodigy Project takes the boys on a field trip to Zamba Funland in Alpharetta for a day of fun, play, and food.
:: May 12, 2009: The Prodigy Project and State Farm establish formal partnership! In alignment with State Farm's support and partnership with the "America's Promise" initiative, their Metro Atlanta African American Forum hosted a Lunch N Learn presentation by Michael Johnson, Founder and CEO of The Prodigy Project.
:: May 06, 2009: Nordstrom at Perimeter Mall hosted The Prodigy Project's Seaborn Lee Elementary School program for a half day of touring of the store's departments and training on the retail business and dressing for success!

  • The Prodigy Project is proud to announce our partnership with the NBA's ATLANTA HAWKS. With the support and generosity of the Atlanta Hawks Foundation, Inc., The Prodigy Project was able to take the boys on field trips, provide meals, purchase reading materials and crafts, and manage our business operations. Without the assistance of the Hawks, one our most valued partners, we would be challenged to provide our current services. Along with the grants, the Hawks also provided well over 300 complimentary tickets to our organization. A big thanks goes out to Hawks Director of Community Development Andrea Carter and the rest of the Community Development team for their continued efforts in supporting our programs. We ask you to PLEASE GO OUT TO THE GAMES AND SUPPORT OUR ATLANTA HAWKS!! >>

  • The Prodigy Project has a program partnership with Seaborn Lee Elementary. Seaborn Lee, a Fulton County school, is located in East Point. Leading the program for the school is Principal Dr. Emily Massey and a staff of 4 male teachers. The program, initiated in 2007 consists of 50 boys selected from grades 1-6. As a component of the specially chosen curriculum, the boys wear custom sweater vests to the sessions. The sessions are conducted on Thursdays 2:30 - 4:15 pm. Sign up to be a volunteer >>


  • The Prodigy Project has a program partnership with the College Park Housing Authority located in College Park, Georgia. The program, initiated in October 2007, consists of 35 boys, ages 5-12, from the local College Park housing community. The sessions are conducted on Saturdays from 12:30 - 3:00 pm at the Public Safety facility. Sign up to be a volunteer >>
